Kunwar Pranav ‘Champion’ Singh
A shocking clip of the son of former BJP MLA Kunwar Pranav ‘Champion’ Singh beating a man with a pistol in his hand has triggered swift action by the police in Dehradun. The video, which emerged on social media, shows the incident taking place on the night of November 14 on Rajpur Road near the Mussoorie Diversion. The accused has been issued a notice to appear within three days.
According to police, the victim was identified as R. Yashovardhan, son of former Chief Secretary S. Ramaswami, and the alleged assailants include the former MLA’s son Divye Pratap Singh and a government gunner. An FIR has been registered with charges including use of a firearm, wrongful restraint and criminal intimidation.
Police say the incident began when Yashovardhan, driving from the Dariya Bill onwards, was overtaken by a white Land Cruiser and a Bolero near the Mussoorie Diversion. When his car could not make way due to narrow road, the other vehicle halted him and its occupants allegedly dragged him out and assaulted him. The assailants are seen in the video displaying a pistol and assaulting the victim amid a crowd that gathered.
An SSP Dehradun officer said: “We have issued a notice to the accused to join the investigation within three days. A government gunner has already been suspended. We are reviewing the weapon licences of the individuals involved.”
Another police statement added: “The registration number of the Land Cruiser has been traced. We have seized the vehicle and are investigating all elements tied to the incident.”
Local commuters and residents expressed alarm over the incident, citing it as yet another case of rising road-rage episodes in the city. One resident said: “Such blatant display of violence and firearm use in broad daylight is alarming. It undermines the sense of security on our roads.”
A civil society activist commented: “This is not just a traffic dispute but a symbol of impunity. Authorities must act decisively to restore public faith in rule-of-law.”
Critics have also pointed to the political ramifications of the case. An opposition spokesperson said: “This incident reflects arrogance by those in power. We demand strict action and clear message that no one is above the law.”
In response, a BJP representative stated: “Police have already taken steps; investigation is underway and we will allow the judicial process to run its course without interference.”
The Dehradun police assured full transparency and promised updates as the investigation progresses. Authorities have indicated that if the accused fail to appear, arrest warrants will be sought. The investigation is expected to examine road-surveillance footage, vehicle tracking logs, weapon licence records and possible nexus with local security personnel.
