PAURI GARHWAL: In a major step towards reinventing India’s traditional postal network for the digital age, the Department of Posts on Sunday inaugurated the state’s first Gen-Z Post Office at Govind Ballabh Pant Engineering College (GBPEC), Ghurdodi in Pauri district. The initiative is part of a nationwide effort to modernise post offices, enhance youth engagement, and transform postal spaces into vibrant, tech-enabled public service hubs.
The post office, redesigned with the participation of college students, now features a youthful aesthetic marked by bright colours, creative wall art, modern seating spaces and digital-first amenities aimed at Gen-Z users. The upgraded facility was formally inaugurated by Shashi Shalini Kujur, Chief Postmaster General of the Uttarakhand Circle, in the presence of Dr. V.K. Banga, Director of GBPEC.
Speaking at the launch, Kujur highlighted the vision behind the initiative. “This is not just about modern décor—it is about reimagining the post office for the future. We want young people to see the Department of Posts as an essential digital partner,” she said. She added that India Post is consciously bridging the gap between legacy public institutions and the expectations of tech-savvy youth.
Dr. Banga praised the collaborative model, noting that students had actively contributed to the design, usability planning, and overall ambience.
“Our students helped shape this space. It gives them ownership and makes the post office a part of their campus life,” he said.
Designed for Gen-Z Needs
The revamped post office includes several new additions tailored to modern users:
- Free Wi-Fi zone
- Mobile charging ports
- Mini library and reading corner
- Comfortable waiting area
- Philately section with My Stamp, corporate My Stamp, picture postcards and collectibles
Alongside traditional postal and banking functions, these facilities are intended to make the post office a place where young people can comfortably access services, study, or simply spend time.
India Post officials explained that the upgrade reflects a larger organisational shift.
“We are redefining the post office as a digital civic centre—where trust meets technology,” an official said.
10% Discount on Speed Post for Students
In a special incentive to promote postal use among young people, the department will offer 10% discount on Speed Post (documents) when students submit applications, recruitment forms, or other official correspondence to recognised educational institutions or government recruitment agencies.
Officials said the concession was introduced because Gen-Z students frequently need to dispatch documents securely and quickly for competitive exams, admissions, scholarships and job applications.
Expanding Services for Youth
The Gen-Z Post Office will also provide:
- Aadhaar-related services
- India Post Payments Bank (IPPB) facilities
- Life Insurance and Postal Insurance options
- Parcel packaging support
- International mail services
These additions are expected to benefit not only GBPEC students but also local youth, villagers and neighbouring institutions.
A Model for the Future
Our correspondent reports that the Department of Posts plans to replicate the Gen-Z post office model across Uttarakhand and other states based on feedback from this pilot location. The idea is to cultivate a long-term relationship between young citizens and India Post by making postal services more intuitive, accessible and digitally aligned.
During the inauguration, students praised the improved layout. A final-year engineering student said, “This doesn’t feel like an old post office anymore—it feels like a cool campus space where we can study, charge devices and get our work done.”
Local residents echoed similar sentiments, stating that the upgraded facility bridges the gap between rural locations and modern conveniences.
Blending Tradition with Innovation
India Post has been steadily integrating technology into its systems—ranging from the IPPB platform to digital tracking, doorstep banking, and Aadhaar services. The Gen-Z Post Office initiative builds upon this foundation by focusing on environment, user experience and youth-oriented design.
Officials emphasised that modernisation does not replace traditional trust.
“We are modernising without losing the values of reliability and service that India Post stands for,” said a senior postal officer.
As the GBPEC Gen-Z post office begins operations, postal authorities expect:
- Higher footfall from youth
- Greater adoption of IPPB banking
- Increased use of Speed Post for official documents
- More interest in philately
- A stronger digital-public service ecosystem in hilly districts like Pauri
The Department of Posts believes the initiative will encourage young citizens to appreciate and use postal infrastructure; thereby strengthening last-mile delivery of government services.
