A 24-year-old man from Gurugram was critically injured after the bungee-jumping cord snapped mid-air during an adventure activity at The Shivpuri Thrill Factory, an adventure sports park in the Shivpuri area of Rishikesh. The incident occurred on Wednesday when the youth leapt from the platform and the safety rope broke, causing him to fall an estimated 35 metres onto the roof of a nearby structure.

Our correspondent reports that the injured man, identified as Sonu Kumar, suffered severe injuries and was rushed to AIIMS Rishikesh, where he remains in critical condition. Eyewitnesses recorded the incident on video, which later went viral, showing the rope snapping and onlookers rushing to assist.

Local authorities have launched a technical investigation into the adventure park’s safety compliance. Officials stated that they will examine the condition of the equipment, adherence to safety standards and the operator’s licensing procedures. Our correspondent adds that activity at the bungee site has been suspended pending the outcome of the inspection and audit.

According to police sources, preliminary findings suggest a possible equipment malfunction. The operator is being questioned and documents related to maintenance and certification have been seized for examination. Officials said that further action will be taken after a detailed report is completed.

Officers from the Muni Ki Reti police station in Tehri Garhwal district said they have called for a technical team to assess the cause of the accident.

“We are finding out if it was caused due to the negligence of the operator or the machine. We will check if the firm is complying with all norms,” an officer told our correspondent.

Meanwhile, Tehri Garhwal District Magistrate Nikita Khandelwal told the media, “I have ordered an inquiry into the matter and all activities at Thrill Factory have been suspended until the probe is complete. A safety audit of all companies involved in adventure activities is also being conducted.”

Residents and adventure-sport professionals in the region expressed concern over the incident. They said that while Rishikesh has become a major hub for adventure tourism, such accidents highlight the need for stronger monitoring, frequent equipment audits and stricter enforcement of safety norms across all operators.

The administration said it would review safety protocols at all adventure facilities in the Shivpuri belt to prevent similar incidents in the future. Officials emphasised that tourism and adventure activities must operate with the highest safety standards, especially in a region that attracts visitors from across the country.
