Sukhoi Emergency Landing
In a significant development, a Sukhoi-30MKI fighter aircraft made an emergency landing at Dehradun’s Jolly Grant Airport after the aircraft experienced a mid-flight technical fault. The jet, which had taken off from Bareilly, was diverted to Dehradun after the pilot detected an abnormality in one of the engines. Defence and airport officials confirmed that the landing was executed safely and no casualties were reported.
Our correspondent reports that the pilot observed an oil leak shortly after take-off and promptly alerted air traffic control. Clearance for an emergency landing was granted immediately, and the runway was prepared for the fighter’s arrival. Emergency response teams and technical staff were placed on standby to manage any potential risk.
The aircraft touched down safely and was moved to a secure bay away from civilian flight operations. Ground engineers and defence technicians began initial inspections to determine the cause of the fault. Airport authorities confirmed that regular flight operations at Jolly Grant Airport continued without disruption during the incident.
Our correspondent adds that a team of specialists from the Bareilly air base reached Dehradun soon after the landing to assist in the technical assessment. Preliminary reports suggest a malfunction in the oil circulation system, though a detailed inquiry is being conducted by the Indian Air Force. A board of investigation will determine the precise cause of the technical fault.
Airport Director Bhupesh C. H. Negi stated that all safety protocols were followed meticulously and praised the coordination between defence and civilian teams. He confirmed that the situation was managed efficiently, ensuring there was no danger to passengers, crew, or airport staff.
Our correspondent reports that the pilot’s swift action and adherence to emergency procedures prevented a potentially serious incident. The Indian Air Force commended the crew for their professionalism and confirmed that precautionary inspections have been ordered for other Sukhoi aircraft stationed at nearby bases.
Experts observed that Dehradun’s Jolly Grant Airport, which supports both civilian and defence operations, has the required infrastructure to manage such emergencies. Aviation analysts emphasised that continued coordination between civil aviation and defence authorities is essential for the smooth handling of dual-use facilities.
Our correspondent adds that Dehradun’s strategic location near the Himalayan foothills makes it an important yet challenging aviation zone. Rapid weather shifts and altitude variations often pose operational challenges, demanding high levels of readiness from pilots and ground teams alike.
Authorities have assured that the grounded aircraft will undergo comprehensive technical checks before being cleared for future missions. The incident has underscored the importance of rigorous maintenance and coordination across India’s defence aviation network.
