Nepal Sets Up Panel to Probe Violence After Gen-Z Protests

Nepal’s interim government has announced the formation of a three-member committee to investigate the deadly violence that erupted during the recent “Gen-Z protests.” The move comes after weeks of turmoil across the country, where demonstrations led by young citizens resulted in dozens of deaths and widespread public concern.

Officials confirmed that the panel has been tasked with examining the causes of the violence, the role of security forces, and the underlying issues that triggered the unrest. The committee has been given three months to submit its report, which is expected to include recommendations for reforms to prevent such incidents in the future.

The protests, largely driven by Nepal’s younger generation, began as a reaction to the government’s decision to ban several social media platforms. Authorities had cited security and misinformation concerns for the ban, but many youths saw it as a direct attack on their freedom of expression and access to information.

The demonstrations quickly expanded beyond the issue of digital restrictions. Protesters voiced anger over deep-rooted corruption, nepotism in politics and public service, and the lack of adequate job opportunities for Nepal’s growing youth population. Large gatherings in Kathmandu and other major cities highlighted the frustrations of a generation that feels disconnected from the country’s political elite.

Clashes between demonstrators and security forces turned violent, leading to casualties that shocked the nation. Rights groups and civil society organisations have demanded accountability, saying excessive force was used against unarmed protesters. Families of victims have also called for justice, placing additional pressure on the government to act decisively.

By establishing the committee, the interim leadership aims to show responsiveness while maintaining stability during a politically delicate period. Observers say the inquiry will test whether the government is willing to confront long-standing governance problems or whether the effort will remain a symbolic exercise.

The protests mark one of the largest youth-led movements in Nepal in recent years. Analysts believe the unrest has revealed a widening gap between traditional politics and the aspirations of younger citizens, who make up a significant share of the population. The outcome of the investigation could influence how Nepal addresses both its democratic freedoms and the socioeconomic challenges facing its youth.
