The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Dehradun and surrounding districts, warning of moderate to heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning over the next few days. The alert will remain in place until August 23rd, with officials urging citizens to exercise caution.

Persistent Rainfall Predicted
According to the IMD, the monsoon trough remains active, and fresh western disturbances are expected to intensify showers across the region. This could lead to waterlogging in urban areas and minor landslides in hilly terrain.

Advisory for Residents and Tourists
Authorities have advised people to stay indoors during heavy rain spells, avoid venturing near swollen rivers or streams, and take precautionary measures against lightning strikes. Tourists visiting Dehradun, Mussoorie, and nearby hill stations have been cautioned to follow official advisories and check weather updates before traveling.

Preparedness Measures
The district administration has directed local bodies to remain on high alert, with disaster management teams keeping a close watch on sensitive areas. Emergency helplines have been activated to provide assistance if required.

The Bigger Picture
With Uttarakhand’s fragile mountain terrain prone to flash floods and landslides, continuous rainfall poses added risks. The IMD has stressed the importance of adhering to safety guidelines to minimise disruption and protect lives.
