Chamoli bike accident

In a tragic road accident in the Chamoli district, two people lost their lives when their bike collided with a pickup truck on Monday. The collision took place near Gopeshwar, close to the new bus terminus, on the way towards Ghinhgahran, state police confirmed.

Our correspondent reports that the two-wheeler occupants were returning after attending a Ram Lila performance when the incident occurred. The bike collided with the pickup and sustained heavy damage; the victims were pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital.

Details gathered by the Gopeshwar Police Station indicate that the accident occurred in the early hours of Sunday. The victims were travelling from Gopeshwar towards Ghinhgahran. The driver lost control and collided with a pickup truck moving in the opposite direction. The police took both vehicles into custody and later dispatched the bodies of the deceased for post-mortem.

Our correspondent adds that of the four people riding on the bike, two died and the other two were badly injured. Police sources said the injured were rushed to the district hospital in Gopeshwar and are undergoing treatment. The identities of the victims and survivors have not yet been officially released pending family notification.

The police are investigating whether excessive speed, inadequate lighting, or a mechanical failure led to the collision. Roads in this mountainous region are prone to accidents due to narrow lanes, sharp curves, and often variable weather conditions. In recent years, Chamoli’s accident-rate has been a matter of concern for local authorities.

Our correspondent adds that local residents have called for the installation of additional warning signage, speed-breakers and better lighting along the Gopeshwar–Ghinhgahrān route. Drivers here say that the stretch is particularly hazardous after dark and during festival seasons when traffic from cultural events increases.

This bike accident marks the latest in a series of fatal road incidents in Uttarakhand. Authorities are expected to conduct a detailed forensic inspection of the vehicles and stump for any violations. The district transport office may also review vehicle usage patterns and licencing compliance.
