DEHRADUN: Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Tuesday approved development projects, including several sewerage projects, worth ₹46.18 crore, giving a significant push to urban sanitation infrastructure and medical education facilities in the state. The approvals include four sewerage management schemes under the Drinking Water Department and the release of funds for the construction of a nursing college in Rudrapur.

Our correspondent reports, Chief Minister Dhami accorded administrative and financial approval for sewerage-related works amounting to ₹43.68 crore. These projects aim to strengthen sewerage systems in key urban areas across Haridwar, Dehradun, and Nainital districts. In addition, ₹2.50 crore was approved for the construction of the academic block and site development of a nursing college within the under-construction medical college campus at Rudrapur in Udham Singh Nagar district.

The approved sewerage schemes are expected to improve sanitation infrastructure, address wastewater management challenges, and enhance public health conditions in densely populated residential areas. The projects are part of the state government’s broader effort to modernise urban infrastructure and reduce environmental pollution caused by untreated sewage.

One of the major projects approved under the Drinking Water Department is the sewerage system scheme for Bhagat Singh Colony and Haripur Kalan in Haridwar district, with an estimated cost of ₹11.22 crore. The project will involve the development of sewerage infrastructure to serve residential areas that currently lack an organised wastewater disposal system. Our correspondent adds that the scheme would help prevent sewage overflow and reduce contamination of nearby water sources.

Meanwhile, in Nainital district, a sewerage scheme costing ₹9.49 crore has been approved for the stretch from Durga City Chowk on Nawabi Road to Kaladhungi Road. The project is intended to improve sewerage coverage in this busy urban corridor, which experiences high population movement and commercial activity. Authorities said the work would contribute to better hygiene conditions and improved quality of life for residents and visitors.

Dehradun city will see multiple sewerage-related interventions under the approved plans. A project worth ₹13.91 crore has been sanctioned for laying sewer lines in the Pathariyapir, Neelkanth Vihar, Indira Colony, and Chukkuwala areas. These localities have faced long-standing sewerage challenges, particularly during the monsoon season. Officials said the new sewer lines would help streamline wastewater flow and prevent waterlogging and sanitation-related issues.

Another sewerage scheme approved for Dehradun falls under the Jalotsaran Yojana. The project, with a cost of ₹9.06 crore, will cover the remaining areas of Zone C in Saket Nagar Colony along Canal Road. Officials said the scheme aims to complete sewerage coverage in the area by addressing gaps left out in earlier phases of development.

In addition to sanitation projects, the Chief Minister approved the release of ₹2.50 crore for the construction of a nursing college at Rudrapur. The funds will be utilised for the construction of the academic block and site development within the campus of the under-construction government medical college. Officials said the nursing college will play an important role in strengthening healthcare education and addressing the shortage of trained nursing professionals in the state.

Authorities said the establishment of nursing education facilities alongside medical colleges would help create a comprehensive healthcare education ecosystem. The nursing college at Rudrapur is expected to support the state’s efforts to improve healthcare delivery by producing skilled nursing staff for hospitals and healthcare institutions.

Our correspondent reports that the approved projects reflect the state government’s focus on improving basic civic amenities and strengthening the healthcare sector. Sewerage infrastructure has been identified as a priority area due to its direct impact on public health and environmental sustainability. At the same time, investments in medical and nursing education are seen as critical for meeting the growing healthcare needs of the population.

Officials added that the concerned departments have been instructed to ensure timely execution of the approved works and maintain quality standards. Regular monitoring mechanisms will be put in place to track progress and address any implementation challenges.

The approvals are expected to benefit residents across multiple districts and contribute to long-term improvements in sanitation, health, and urban living conditions in the state.
