Uttarakhand Earthquake – Strong Jolts Felt In Chamoli-Bageshwar Border Areas

Uttarakhand earthquake

A sharp earthquake shook the mountainous region along the Chamoli-Bageshwar border in Uttarakhand. The tremor, felt primarily at 2:42 p.m., caused panic among local residents who emerged hastily from their homes.

Our correspondent reports that the epicentre of the quake was located in Bageshwar district, while the neighbouring Tharali area of Chamoli district also experienced the impact. District Disaster Management Officer Nandkishore Joshi confirmed the timing and district of the event.

The magnitude of the quake is estimated at 3.6 on the Richter scale according to seismic monitoring data. Although no damage or casualties have been reported so far, officials emphasise that the region lies in a high-seismic risk zone and urge vigilance.

Residents of Gwaldam and other local villages said the tremor lasted only seconds but was strong enough to rattle doors, shake furniture and prompt swift exit from houses. “It felt like the ground moved under our feet,” one villager commented.

Our correspondent adds that the state’s disaster response agencies have initiated standard checks in affected villages. Teams were dispatched to verify building integrity, assess landslide risks and monitor after-shock possibilities.

Seismologists point out that the Garhwal-Kumaon border zone is seismically active due to the Himalayan tectonic dynamics. They stress the importance of ensuring that mountain-region infrastructure such as schools, hospitals and roads adhere to earthquake-resistant design.

Officials advise villagers and tourists to stay alert, especially in vulnerable areas near landslide-prone slopes and next to riverbanks. They also ask citizens to avoid panic and follow instructions issued by the local administration.

Meanwhile, the Chamoli-Bageshwar border region has been under weather and landslide watch in recent days following heavy rainfall. Some experts believe the quake, though small, should serve as a reminder of the region’s fragile geology and help spur preparedness efforts.

Our correspondent reports that local administration will hold awareness campaigns this week to inform residents about earthquake safety, emergency assembly points and safe evacuation routes.

In concluding remarks, officials affirm that the current situation is under control, yet they underscore that mountain districts like Chamoli and Bageshwar must build resilience to natural hazards. No major after-shock was recorded in the hours following the initial tremor.
