In a tragic development, the body of missing freelance journalist Rajiv Pratap was discovered on Sunday at the Joshiyara Barrage, nearly ten days after he went missing in Uttarkashi.

Our correspondent reports that the joint search team retrieved the body from the barrage and handed it over to police officials. A post-mortem is being carried out at the district hospital, where family members have formally identified the deceased.

According to police, Rajiv Pratap had left for Gangori from Gyanasu on the night of 18 September, driving a car belonging to his friend Soban Singh. When he failed to return, a missing person report was lodged at the local police station. The next morning, the vehicle was found abandoned near Syuna village on the banks of the Bhagirathi River, but there was no trace of Rajiv.

Our correspondent adds that the search involved multiple agencies including the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), local police and QRT teams. Their efforts covered stretches from Gangori to Chinyalisaur, especially the reservoir area around Joshiyara.

Officials say the body was located after hours of scanning the barrage. Upon recovery, authorities completed formalities at the site and transferred the body for identification and further investigation.

Our correspondent reports that the district administration has ordered an inquiry into the circumstances of Pratap’s disappearance and death. Police said all possibilities, including foul play, are being considered until forensic results are available.

Residents and media organisations have expressed shock and demanded a transparent and speedy probe. Rajiv Pratap was known for his reporting on social issues and allegations of irregularities in government departments. His family had earlier claimed that he had been receiving threats after covering certain sensitive topics.

Our correspondent adds that the death has raised concerns about the safety of journalists in remote regions. Local press associations have urged authorities to ensure protection for reporters working in challenging terrain.

With investigations underway, officials have asked anyone with video footage, messages or abnormal observations from the area between 18 and 28 September to come forward. They reiterated their commitment to uncover the truth behind this tragic incident.
