The renowned Rajaji Tiger Reserve will reopen its gates to wildlife enthusiasts on November 15, marking the beginning of the winter jungle safari season. Registrations for the popular eco-tourism adventure have already begun, inviting nature lovers from across the country to experience the wilderness and rich biodiversity of Uttarakhand.
Our correspondent reports that applications for operating safari vehicles must be submitted by October 25, while the last date for completing registration formalities has been fixed for October 30. These deadlines apply to safari-vehicle owners and tour operators wishing to participate in the new season.
The safari will be conducted in the reserve’s four major ranges, which are: Chilla (30 km), Haridwar-Ranipur (24 km), Motichur (22 km) and Ranipur (36 km). More than 160 vehicles are expected to operate across these zones during peak tourist days. The safari season also provides employment opportunities to over 200 local residents who work as guides, drivers and support staff.
Our correspondent adds that forest officials are carrying out final maintenance work on the safari tracks, gates, and related facilities. Authorities said all preparations will be completed by October 31, ensuring that visitors enjoy a safe and seamless experience. The winter season, which lasts from mid-November to mid-June, is regarded as the best period to sight tigers, elephants, leopards, deer, and over 300 species of birds in their natural habitat.
Officials informed that safari-vehicle owners can register through the official Rajaji Tiger Reserve office or online portal. Strict adherence to wildlife conservation norms, eco-tourism guidelines, and visitor safety protocols will be enforced throughout the season. Forest guards and trained naturalists will accompany tourists to ensure compliance with park rules.
Experts have noted that the reopening of Rajaji Tiger Reserve in mid-November coincides with a favourable change in forest conditions. As the post-monsoon vegetation begins to dry, wildlife activity near water sources increases, enhancing the chances of sightings. Visitors have been advised to book their safaris in advance, follow eco-friendly practices, and avoid actions such as loud music, littering, or off-track driving, which disturb the park’s ecosystem.
Officials said the safari initiative is part of the government’s broader effort to promote eco-tourism and wildlife awareness in the state. The revenue generated from the safari operations will support habitat management, anti-poaching measures, and community development in adjoining forest villages.
The Rajaji Tiger Reserve, spread over 820 square kilometres, spans the districts of Dehradun, Haridwar, and Pauri Garhwal. Known for its diverse flora and fauna, the reserve forms a vital part of the Shivalik range and is home to several endangered species. Its reopening after the monsoon is expected to provide a major boost to Uttarakhand’s tourism economy and showcase the state’s commitment to sustainable wildlife conservation.
