In a major directive aimed at providing immediate relief to grieving families, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has ordered officials to disburse ex-gratia assistance to disaster victims within a strict timeframe. Moving to streamline the process, the Chief Minister mandated that payments in cases of death be made within 72 hours, with a maximum permissible delay of one week.

The directive, issued during a high-level review meeting on the ongoing monsoon crisis on 21st August, comes amid a season that has claimed a significant number of lives and left a trail of destruction across the state. CM Dhami’s firm stance on the issue reflects the administration’s focus on providing swift financial and emotional support to those affected by flash floods, landslides, and other weather-related incidents.

“We will not tolerate any delays in getting this crucial assistance to the families who have lost their loved ones,” the Chief Minister was quoted as saying, emphasising the government’s commitment to the welfare of its citizens. He further instructed district magistrates to conduct a thorough and rapid assessment of all monsoon-related damage. This data, he explained, is essential for preparing a comprehensive report to be submitted to the central government to secure additional funding for relief and rehabilitation efforts.

The move is seen as a proactive measure to cut through bureaucratic red tape and ensure that financial aid reaches beneficiaries directly and without hindrances. Officials in various districts have been put on high alert to adhere to the new guidelines, with the administration making it clear that accountability will be a key metric for performance.

The directive is a critical step in the state’s broader disaster management strategy, which includes enhanced early warning systems, improved road connectivity, and community preparedness initiatives, all aimed at building a more resilient Uttarakhand.
