Uttarakhand is set to see a significant boost in its railway infrastructure as authorities have completed the survey of a new rail line in the state. In parallel, the Ministry of Railways has confirmed the selection of 11 stations under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, which aims to modernise facilities and enhance passenger experience across India’s railway network.

Survey of New Railway Line
Railway officials confirmed that the survey for the proposed new line has been successfully completed, marking an important milestone in expanding connectivity in the hilly state. While specific details of the alignment are expected to be announced shortly, the project is seen as critical for improving access to remote regions and boosting both passenger and freight movement. The line will also be designed keeping in mind the state’s terrain, which poses engineering challenges but also offers opportunities for tourism-linked development.

Amrit Bharat Station Scheme in Uttarakhand
As part of the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, 11 stations across Uttarakhand have been shortlisted for redevelopment. These include key transit hubs and smaller stations with strategic importance. The scheme, launched by the Ministry of Railways, is focused on long-term development of stations with modern passenger amenities such as:

  • Improved platforms and waiting areas,

  • Free Wi-Fi and digital displays,

  • Energy-efficient lighting and green building features,

  • Better traffic circulation, parking, and multimodal integration.

Officials said that redevelopment under the scheme is not limited to cosmetic upgrades but involves phased master planning to ensure stations can cater to future passenger growth.

Boost for Connectivity and Tourism
The combined effect of the new rail line and station upgrades is expected to improve connectivity to Uttarakhand’s pilgrimage circuits, tourism hubs, and hill towns. Enhanced rail infrastructure will also ease transport of local produce, horticulture goods, and handicrafts, offering a boost to rural livelihoods.

Government’s Vision
State officials have welcomed the central government’s initiative, calling it a game-changer for Uttarakhand’s economy and accessibility. They said the focus on sustainable construction and energy efficiency is in line with the state’s ecological sensitivities.

Background: The Amrit Bharat Scheme
Launched in 2022, the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme covers more than 1,200 railway stations nationwide. It envisions stations as modern transit hubs that serve as “gateways to cities” with enhanced passenger facilities, better integration with surrounding development, and eco-friendly infrastructure.
