Rain And Snow Forecast For State’s Mountain Regions

Major parts of Uttarakhand are expected to experience light rain and snowfall over the next 24 hours, according to the regional centre of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) in Dehradun. The weather advisory indicates possible precipitation and isolated thunderstorms, particularly across high-altitude and upper-mountain districts of the state.

Our correspondent reports that isolated rainfall is likely in Uttarkashi, Dehradun, Chamoli, Pithoragarh, Bageshwar, and Rudraprayag, while light snowfall is expected in the upper reaches of Chamoli, Pithoragarh, and Uttarkashi. The change in weather has been attributed to a weak western disturbance passing over the western Himalayan region, causing localised shifts in temperature and moisture levels.

An IMD official stated that the precipitation will likely be brief and of low intensity, mainly affecting higher altitudes. While isolated thunderstorm activity with lightning may occur in select areas, most plains and lower valleys are expected to remain dry. Temperatures across the state are forecast to drop slightly, marking the onset of pre-winter conditions in the hills.

Our correspondent adds that the forecast comes as mountain roads and pilgrimage trails remain active, prompting local authorities to issue advisories for travellers and residents. Motorists and trekkers have been cautioned about reduced visibility, slippery surfaces, and potential road obstructions in hilly areas due to rain and early-season snow.

District disaster management teams in Chamoli, Uttarkashi, and Pithoragarh have been placed on alert to monitor potential landslide-prone stretches and coordinate with police and forest officials. The IMD has advised the public to avoid unnecessary travel to upper-mountain regions during the night and to stay updated with local weather reports.

Officials explained that the weak western disturbance has led to the inflow of moist air from the Arabian Sea, resulting in isolated showers and snowfall in the higher Himalayas. While the system is not strong enough to cause widespread disruption, the meteorological department has urged vigilance, especially in remote and high-altitude villages where accessibility may be affected.

Our correspondent reports that the Gangotri–Yamunotri and Joshimath–Badrinath corridors, as well as Pithoragarh’s Munsiyari and Dharchula regions, are among the areas expected to witness the early winter conditions. Local authorities have been advised to ensure preparedness of emergency services and maintain communication with field units.

The IMD has clarified that no heavy rainfall warnings have been issued, and the overall impact is expected to remain minimal. However, travellers to hill destinations have been advised to carry warm clothing and essential supplies, as temperature dips are likely following the precipitation.

With the festive season and the Char Dham Yatra nearing completion, tourism operators are keeping a close watch on weather developments. Early snowfall, while potentially affecting mobility, is also expected to attract tourists seeking a glimpse of the first snow of the season in the upper Himalayan zones.

As the state transitions towards winter, the IMD has urged all district administrations to remain prepared for subsequent western disturbances likely in late October and early November.
