Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami visited the Kunawala market in Dehradun on Wednesday as part of a mass awareness drive aimed at promoting the “Adopt Swadeshi” campaign and explaining the revised GST rates. His interaction with traders and local residents focused on both cultural pride and economic growth.
Our correspondent reports that the Chief Minister walked through the bustling marketplace, speaking directly with shopkeepers and community members. He emphasised that adopting indigenous products is a crucial step toward building a self-reliant India. By preferring Swadeshi items, he explained, citizens not only support national interest but also strengthen local industries, artisans and small entrepreneurs.
The Chief Minister underlined that greater use of locally made goods would open up more employment opportunities for the youth and reduce dependency on foreign products. He appealed to people to integrate Swadeshi into their daily lives, saying such choices were patriotic acts that also delivered long-term economic benefits.
Our correspondent adds that Dhami linked the Swadeshi movement with the state’s broader development goals. He said the campaign is not symbolic but a practical path to strengthen both households and communities. He called on citizens to treat Swadeshi adoption as a lifestyle change rather than a festival slogan.
Turning to taxation, the Chief Minister highlighted the recent changes in GST rates. He said the modifications were designed to make the system simpler, more transparent and more citizen-friendly. According to him, the adjustments would ease trade, reduce confusion for business owners and accelerate the pace of economic activity in the state.
Our correspondent reports that Dhami described GST reform as a tool for growth. He said a straightforward tax structure would help businesses focus on expansion rather than paperwork, and the resulting rise in revenue would allow the government to invest more in welfare and infrastructure.
The Chief Minister stressed that the “Adopt Swadeshi” campaign and GST reforms must be understood together. While the first boosts domestic production and employment, the second ensures that economic transactions are smooth and fair. He argued that both together would put Uttarakhand’s economy on a stronger foundation.
Our correspondent adds that Dhami expressed confidence that awareness drives like the one at Kunawala would spread across the state. He encouraged citizens to become ambassadors of Swadeshi in their own neighbourhoods, convincing others of the benefits. He said only collective participation could turn the campaign into a mass movement that delivers lasting results.
The Chief Minister concluded by noting that government initiatives alone cannot bring about transformation. He emphasised that the role of the people is vital in shaping economic destiny. By adopting Swadeshi and supporting tax reforms, he said, every citizen could contribute directly to a prosperous and self-reliant Uttarakhand.
On this occasion, local legislator Brijbhushan Gairola was also present, adding his support to the campaign and interacting with market visitors.
