Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has paid heartfelt tribute to Captain Vikram Batra, the distinguished hero of the 1999 Kargil War, on his birth anniversary. The Chief Minister shared an image on his official X handle, honouring the brave officer who was posthumously awarded the Param Vir Chakra, India’s highest gallantry award.

The post, which features an image of Captain Batra in his army uniform, acknowledges his ultimate sacrifice. In a formal statement, the Chief Minister commemorated Batra’s immense bravery and his selfless service to the nation. This tribute serves to remind the public of the profound debt the country owes to its soldiers who have laid down their lives to protect its sovereignty.

The Story of Captain Vikram Batra

Captain Vikram Batra is an enduring symbol of courage and patriotism in India. Born on September 9, 1974, in Palampur, Himachal Pradesh, he had a lifelong dream of joining the armed forces. After graduating from the Indian Military Academy (IMA) in Dehradun, he was commissioned into the 13th Battalion, Jammu and Kashmir Rifles, in 1997.

His legacy was forged on the icy peaks of Kargil during the 1999 conflict with Pakistan. In one of the most critical missions of the war, Captain Batra was tasked with recapturing the strategically vital Point 5140. Leading his team with an aggressive and audacious approach, he scaled the treacherous cliff face under heavy enemy fire. In a daring assault, he and his men neutralized the enemy position, securing the peak. Upon this victory, he famously radioed his command with the triumphant message, “Yeh Dil Maange More!” (The heart wants more!), a phrase that became an iconic battle cry for the entire Indian Army.

Following his success, Captain Batra was assigned to recapture Point 4875, another difficult and well-fortified enemy position. It was during this operation on July 7, 1999, that he made his supreme sacrifice. While trying to rescue a fellow officer who had been severely injured, Captain Batra was hit by enemy fire. Despite being mortally wounded, he ensured his comrade was safe before succumbing to his injuries.

For his conspicuous bravery, leadership of the highest order, and selflessness, Captain Vikram Batra was posthumously awarded the Param Vir Chakra. His unwavering spirit and heroic actions continue to inspire millions.

His sagas of valor will forever continue to inspire us for the service of the nation.
