In a significant step towards improving urban mobility, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami inaugurated the Haldwani City Bus Service on Tuesday, marking a new chapter in the city’s public transport system. The Chief Minister flagged off the first fleet of buses from the Circuit House premises, in the presence of senior officials, public representatives, and a large number of local residents.
The new city bus service is expected to bring relief to thousands of daily commuters by offering safe, affordable, and reliable transportation. Speaking at the launch event, Chief Minister Dhami said that the service is a crucial step in the direction of sustainable city development. He remarked that this initiative will not only benefit the citizens but also help reduce traffic congestion, lower pollution levels, and promote energy conservation.
The Chief Minister said that the state government’s goal is to develop modern, environment-friendly, and secure transport systems across all towns of Uttarakhand. He added that improved public transport is essential for urban growth and social inclusion, ensuring that citizens have access to safe and cost-effective travel options.
Officials from the Transport Department informed that the Haldwani City Bus Service will be introduced in phases across major routes of the city. The service will initially cover key residential, commercial, and educational areas to cater to local residents, students, and office-goers. Additional routes will be included based on public feedback and passenger demand in the coming months.
Authorities stated that special attention has been given to safety standards and operational efficiency. Each bus is equipped with modern safety systems, comfortable seating, and digital ticketing arrangements. The Transport Department has also proposed to integrate smart card facilities and real-time GPS tracking for the convenience of passengers.
City planners believe that this initiative will play an important role in reducing the dependence on private vehicles, thereby easing the pressure on roads and improving traffic discipline. The service is also expected to contribute to environmental protection by promoting the use of collective transportation over individual commuting.
The Chief Minister expressed confidence that the new bus network would enhance connectivity between the city centre and outer residential areas, making travel more convenient for the working population. He also appreciated the efforts of the Transport Department and the local administration for executing the project efficiently.
The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from the public and local representatives. Several dignitaries, including MLA Banshidhar Bhagat (Kaladhungi), MLA Ram Singh Kaida (Bhimtal), BJP District President Pratap Bisht, Kumaon Commissioner Deepak Rawat, Inspector General Riddhim Aggarwal, and Chief Development Officer Anamika, were present on the occasion.
Officials noted that Haldwani’s growing population and expanding urban boundaries have created a pressing need for a structured and accessible transport network. The introduction of this bus service, they said, will improve mobility for students, workers, and senior citizens who depend on public transit for their daily commute.
Citizens welcomed the Chief Minister’s announcement, expressing optimism that the city bus service would transform travel within Haldwani. Many residents said that the initiative reflects the state government’s commitment to improving civic infrastructure and prioritising sustainable growth.
The launch of the Haldwani City Bus Service is part of the broader plan of the Uttarakhand government to modernise transport facilities and promote environment-friendly initiatives. The Chief Minister reiterated that similar services will gradually be introduced in other urban centres of the state to ensure balanced regional development and better connectivity.
As the buses began their inaugural journey through the city, the atmosphere in Haldwani was marked by enthusiasm and hope. The day symbolised not just the start of a new transport service but also the vision of a cleaner, more organised, and citizen-friendly urban future.
