Central Team in Uttarakhand to Review Monsoon Damage

An inter-ministerial team from the central government is arriving in Uttarakhand today to assess the widespread damage caused by disasters during this year’s monsoon season. Our correspondent reports that the team is expected to tour the worst-affected districts, meet local officials, and evaluate the extent of losses to infrastructure, agriculture, and public property. Their findings will form the basis for recommending central assistance to the state.

This year’s monsoon has left a trail of destruction across Uttarakhand. Landslides, cloudbursts, and flash floods have repeatedly struck hilly regions, leaving villages cut off for days at a time. Roads have been washed away, bridges damaged, and electricity supply disrupted in several remote areas. Farmers have reported heavy losses to crops, especially in districts where torrential rainfall struck during the harvest period.

Our correspondent adds that the state government has admitted the cumulative damage runs into hundreds of crores of rupees, underlining the importance of central support. Relief and rehabilitation work is already under way, but officials stress that rebuilding roads, restoring water supply systems, and repairing public buildings will require sustained investment.

Even as the central team prepares to begin its inspection, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of more unsettled weather. According to the latest forecast, heavy rain is likely today in parts of Dehradun, Pauri, Bageshwar, and Nainital districts. Intermittent showers are also expected across most of the state. The continuing rainfall poses risks of further landslides and road blockages, complicating the relief and restoration efforts already in progress.

District administrations have been instructed to remain on high alert. Disaster management teams are stationed in sensitive areas, and machinery is on standby to clear landslides and reopen blocked highways. Officials say that while many roads have been reopened after earlier damage, some remain partially blocked, causing difficulties for residents and pilgrims.

The arrival of the inter-ministerial team is seen as a crucial step in securing financial aid. By conducting on-the-spot assessments, the team will provide the central government with a clearer picture of the challenges Uttarakhand faces in balancing immediate disaster response with long-term rebuilding. For local communities still reeling from the relentless rain, the visit offers hope that additional resources may soon flow in to speed up recovery.
