DEHRADUN: Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Thursday paid homage to freedom fighter Veer Chandra Singh ‘Garhwali’, the hero of the historic Peshawar Incident, on his birth anniversary. The Chief Minister offered floral tributes to Garhwali’s portrait at the Chief Minister’s residence here and recalled his extraordinary courage and moral strength during India’s freedom struggle.

Remembering the legacy of the Peshawar Incident hero, the Chief Minister said that Veer Chandra Singh Garhwali set a rare example of patriotism by refusing to obey orders to open fire on unarmed civilians who were participating in the freedom movement. He said Garhwali’s decision reflected not only bravery but also a deep commitment to humanity, justice and national values.

“Veer Chandra Singh Garhwali demonstrated unmatched courage and ethical firmness by rejecting the order to shoot at innocent and unarmed people. His action remains a symbol of moral strength and selfless patriotism,” the Chief Minister said.

Highlighting the historical significance of the Peshawar Incident, the Chief Minister said it marked a crucial turning point in India’s struggle for independence. He noted that the incident strengthened the freedom movement and inspired countless Indians to rise against colonial oppression.

“The Peshawar Incident stands as an important milestone in the history of India’s freedom struggle. It gave a new direction and revolutionary momentum to the independence movement and strengthened the resolve of the people to fight injustice,” he said.

Veer Chandra Singh Garhwali, a soldier in the British Indian Army, earned a place of honour in the history of India’s freedom movement for his courageous stand during the Peshawar Incident of 1930. His refusal to carry out orders against peaceful demonstrators became a defining moment that exposed the moral conflict within colonial rule and inspired resistance across the country.

The Chief Minister said that Garhwali’s life and actions continue to inspire generations, particularly the youth, to stand up for truth, justice and national dignity. He said remembering such heroes is essential to keep alive the values on which the nation’s freedom was achieved.

“Our freedom fighters sacrificed everything for the nation. Their lives remind us that the struggle for justice and equality requires courage, integrity and unwavering commitment,” Dhami said.

He further said that the state government remains committed to preserving the legacy of freedom fighters and ensuring that their contributions are passed on to future generations through education and public remembrance.

The tribute ceremony at the Chief Minister’s residence was marked by solemn reflection on Garhwali’s contribution to the freedom movement. Officials present on the occasion said the event served as a reminder of the sacrifices made by countless freedom fighters whose moral courage shaped the course of Indian history.

Historians regard the Peshawar Incident as one of the most significant acts of defiance by Indian soldiers against colonial authority. Veer Chandra Singh Garhwali’s refusal to fire on civilians is remembered as a powerful assertion of conscience over command, reinforcing the moral foundation of the freedom struggle.

By paying tribute to the Peshawar Incident hero, the Chief Minister reiterated the importance of honouring those who upheld the highest ideals of patriotism and humanity during the most challenging phases of the nation’s past.
