DEHRADUN: In preparation for the upcoming electoral roll revision, BJP will deploy Booth Level Agents (BLAs) at all polling stations across the state by December 31, the state party leadership announced after a virtual review meeting on Tuesday. The decision aims to ensure full coverage at all 11,733 polling booths well before the December 31 deadline.

In the meeting, party functionaries said that the first batch of BLAs (BLA-1) covering all 70 assembly constituencies had already been appointed. The leadership resolved to expedite the deployment of the second batch (BLA-2) so that every booth has at least one party-nominated agent before the end of the year.

Our correspondent reports that the move comes ahead of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, which has been initiated by the state for 2026. The presence of BLA agents at every polling station is seen as crucial for assisting voters, verifying data, and preventing exclusion or irregularities during the revision drive.

Our correspondent adds that so far only 2,836 BLAs have been deployed, well short of the required 11,733. The leadership said lists of prospective agents are being prepared and documentation is under process to send full deployment reports to the Chief Electoral Officer.

Party officials said that BLAs under this plan will reach out to migrant voters and temporarily displaced persons, encouraging them to register back at their home booths and ensure their voting rights remain intact. The move was described as part of a larger outreach effort in hilly and remote areas of the state where voter list accuracy is an ongoing challenge.

Meanwhile, opposition parties have reacted with caution, saying that designation of party agents at every booth may raise concerns over voter privacy and impartiality during voter verification. Some activists have urged adherence to established electoral norms and transparent oversight to ensure fair revision.

According to election experts, deployment of political-party nominated agents like BLAs is allowed under guidelines, but their actions must be monitored to prevent coercion or undue influence. They stressed the importance of balancing voter assistance with safeguarding free and fair electoral processes.

With the December 31 deadline approaching, state BJP leadership is under pressure to finalise all appointments. They said they will meet the target and submit complete lists to the election office. Completion of full BLA deployment will mark a critical step before the SIR begins next year.
