The Central Bureau of Investigation in collaboration with the Ministry of External Affairs and the Ministry of Home Affairs has coordinated the return of wanted fugitive Jagdish Punetha from the United Arab Emirates on November 13. Officials confirmed that the handover followed a structured multi agency effort involving diplomatic, legal and investigative coordination across departments.

Our correspondent reports that the accused is wanted by Uttarakhand Police in FIR number 239 of the year 2021, registered at Pithoragarh Police Station. The case concerns allegations of cheating and criminal conspiracy. The accused left India soon after the case was filed and remained outside the country until his location was established through coordinated exchanges between agencies.

The Central Bureau of Investigation facilitated the publication of a Red Notice on May 6 of the year 2025 following a request from Uttarakhand Police. The notice was issued through the international police organisation to alert global law enforcement agencies. Our correspondent adds that this notice provided the framework for locating the accused and enabling action in the partner country.

Officials stated that the accused was traced to the United Arab Emirates after sustained communication through authorised channels. The authorities of the United Arab Emirates acted upon the request and apprehended the accused after verifying his identity and records. The confirmation of his detention allowed the next stage of the process to proceed.

A team of Uttarakhand Police travelled to the United Arab Emirates following official communication. The team completed necessary formalities with the authorities of the partner country and secured custody of the accused after the required legal verification. He was escorted to New Delhi after completing documentation procedures. Officials confirmed that he will now be produced before the appropriate court in accordance with due process.

The Central Bureau of Investigation issued a detailed statement after the return of the accused. The agency explained its role as the National Central Bureau for India, responsible for coordination with the international police organisation on behalf of domestic agencies. It also supports state police forces through the Bharathpol system, which facilitates secure communication and follow up in cross border cases.

Officials noted that more than 150 wanted individuals have been brought back to India in recent years through similar cooperation. Such operations require coordination with many international partners and adherence to diplomatic and legal procedures consistent with international practice. They stated that these efforts strengthen law enforcement by ensuring accountability across borders.

The Ministry of External Affairs and the Ministry of Home Affairs provided support throughout the process. Their involvement ensured compliance with international requirements and maintained coordination with the authorities of the United Arab Emirates. Officials confirmed that all steps were taken in accordance with established guidelines and procedures.

Authorities in Uttarakhand Police stated that the investigation will now move to the next phase. They will review earlier evidence, record additional statements and complete further procedural requirements. The case will be advanced before the court after evaluating the material available against the accused. Officials emphasised that the investigation will continue strictly in accordance with law.

The return of the accused represents a significant development for the case registered in Pithoragarh. It also demonstrates the capacity of national agencies to collaborate with international partners in complex investigations. Officials indicated that further action will follow after the completion of remaining procedures. The inquiry will proceed under established legal processes.
