The central government has introduced voluntary hallmarking for silver jewellery, enhanced by a digital Hallmarking Unique Identification (HUID) system for quality assurance, with effect from the first of this month.

In a statement, the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution said that the decision will help consumers in ensuring the purity of the metal while purchasing it.

The Ministry said that consumers can now verify the article type, purity grade, hallmarking date, testing centre details and jeweller registration number of hallmarked silver through the BIS Care mobile application

The Bureau of Indian Standards introduced silver jewellery hallmarking on a voluntary basis since October 2005. Under the hallmarking scheme for silver jewellery, the silver jewellers are granteda  certificate of registration in accordance with IS 2112 to sell hallmarked silver jewellery.
