Temporary Lake Formed in Harsil Raises New Flooding Threat

In the aftermath of the recent flash flood, a temporary lake measuring nearly half a kilometre has formed in the upper reaches of Harsil. Officials warn that the unstable water body could breach without warning, posing a serious danger to downstream settlements.

Geologists and disaster-management teams have been dispatched to assess the lake’s stability. Plans are being drawn up for controlled drainage to reduce the risk of a sudden release of water. SDRF teams are clearing debris around the site, while continuous monitoring is being carried out to detect any change in water level or pressure.

The situation is being complicated by persistent rainfall, which has slowed road repair work and restricted ground access to the area. Authorities remain on high alert and are urging residents downstream to stay vigilant.
