Uttarakhand will host its first-ever high-altitude ultra-marathon, the Adi Kailash Parikrama Run, in November 2025. The event, announced under the leadership of Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, is being billed as a milestone for sports, adventure tourism, and the local economy in the Himalayan state.
According to our correspondent, the marathon route will pass through sacred and scenic areas of Pithoragarh district, at an altitude of nearly 3,300 meters. The location is expected to challenge athletes both physically and mentally while highlighting Uttarakhand’s unique blend of spirituality and adventure.
Race Details and Categories
The Adi Kailash Parikrama Run is scheduled for November 2, with multiple race categories:
-
62 km ultra-marathon
-
42 km full marathon
-
10 km intermediate run
-
5 km amateur run
The event is expected to attract between 80–100 participants, including international athletes from African nations (subject to approvals).
Logistics and Safety Measures
The Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) will provide logistical support, while the Indian Army will keep helicopters on standby for emergencies. Medical camps and rescue teams will be stationed along the course.
Our correspondent adds that acclimatization support and health checks will be mandatory for all participants, ensuring their readiness for high-altitude conditions. The Uttarakhand Tourism Department is coordinating closely with local administration and sports federations to ensure smooth execution.
Prize Money and Recognition
The total prize pool is projected at ₹50–60 lakh, making it one of the most lucrative long-distance races in the country. Beyond financial incentives, the race will provide global recognition for athletes who conquer one of South Asia’s most demanding terrains.
Chief Minister Dhami said the initiative would not only strengthen Uttarakhand’s identity as “Devbhoomi” but also help establish it as “Khelbhoomi”. He emphasized that the event will attract adventure tourists, generate employment opportunities, and boost the cultural and spiritual significance of the Adi Kailash circuit.
Boost to Adventure Tourism
Tour operators have already begun curating packages that combine pilgrimage to Adi Kailash with participation in or attendance at the marathon. Local homestays and guesthouses in Pithoragarh are preparing to welcome increased tourist inflow during the event. Officials say the marathon will give a strong push to Uttarakhand’s growing adventure tourism sector.
Broader Sports Vision
The event is part of the state government’s wider sports development plan, which includes setting up 23 sports academies in 8 cities, a Sports University in Haldwani, and a Women’s Sports College in Lohaghat. Officials say such initiatives will create a new identity for Uttarakhand as a center for both sports and spiritual tourism.
