In a commanding start to their Asia Cup campaign, Pakistan overwhelmed Oman by 93 runs in their Group A match held on Friday at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. The match marked Oman’s debut in the main round of the Asia Cup. Pakistan’s solid batting and incisive bowling ensured a one-sided result as they aimed to build momentum ahead of their marquee clash with India.
Pakistan won the toss and chose to bat first, putting up a total of 160 for 7 in their allotted 20 overs. The innings got off to a poor start with opener Saim Ayub departing for a golden duck, caught off Shah Faisal’s bowling. However, Mohammad Haris and Sahibzada Farhan steadied the ship with a pivotal 84-run partnership. Haris, in particular, stood out with a fiery 66 off 43 balls, laced with seven fours and three sixes. Farhan offered solid support with a patient 29.
Oman’s bowlers had moments of success, especially veteran Aamir Kaleem who removed both Haris and Farhan in quick succession and later also claimed the wicket of Pakistan captain Salman Agha. Shah Faisal chipped in with key wickets as well, while Fakhar Zaman’s unbeaten 23 off 16 balls helped Pakistan post a defendable total.
Chasing 161, Oman were never able to settle. Early dismissals, including the wickets of Jatinder Singh and Kaleem, put the innings under pressure. Vinayak Shukla was run out by a sharp throw from Shaheen Afridi, and Mirza’s 27 provided some resistance before being dismissed by Muqeem. Oman’s batting crumbled as they were bowled out for 67 in 16.4 overs. Muqeem, Ayub, and Faheem Ashraf all picked up two wickets each, with Afridi, Abrar Ahmed, and Nawaz adding their own.
This win gives Pakistan an early boost in Group A, putting them second in the points table behind India on net run rate. Oman, despite impressive spells with the ball, were unable to counter the depth and balance of Pakistan’s attack. Their debut performance will raise questions about their ability to withstand pressure against more experienced sides.
Mohammad Haris was named Player of the Match for his aggressive yet composed half-century. His innings laid the foundation for Pakistan’s total and set the tone for the bowling performance that followed.
As the Asia Cup progresses, Pakistan will look to continue this dominant form, especially when they face India next. Oman, on the other hand, will have to regroup quickly and find better consistency in both batting and bowling to stay relevant in the group.
