The Supreme Court of India on Tuesday directed the Uttarakhand High Court to promptly decide on a plea concerning the appointment of a receiver for the Maa Chandi Devi Temple in Haridwar, one of the most prominent shrines in Uttarakhand. The apex court also sought clarity on the interim arrangements governing temple administration.
The Case at Hand
The matter arose following disputes regarding the management and control of temple affairs, including the role and legitimacy of the appointed receiver. Petitioners argued that the current arrangement could affect both ritual practices and the financial administration of the shrine, which draws lakhs of devotees every year, especially during festive seasons and the Kanwar Yatra.
Supreme Court’s Observation
The bench observed that issues concerning temple governance and receiver appointments should be handled with urgency, given the temple’s religious significance and the sensitivity of public faith. Directing the High Court to expedite proceedings, the Supreme Court refrained from passing any interim orders but emphasised that the matter must be settled without undue delay.

Located atop the Neel Parvat hill in Haridwar, Maa Chandi Devi Temple is regarded as one of the Shakti Peethas and a major destination for pilgrims. Its management structure has often been under scrutiny due to overlapping roles of trusts, local committees, and state-appointed administrators.
