Probe Ordered into Illegal Eco-Hut Constructions in Munsyari Reserve Forest

Eco-Huts in Munsyari Reserve Forest

The Ministry of Environment has ordered a probe into allegations of unauthorised eco-hut constructions within the Khaliya Reserve Forest near Munsyari in Pithoragarh district. The directive comes amid growing concerns over unregulated tourism projects in Uttarakhand’s fragile Himalayan ecosystem.

Allegations of Encroachment

Reports suggest that several eco-huts were built in forest land without proper environmental clearance or adherence to forest conservation laws. Local environmental groups allege that such constructions threaten the ecological balance of Khaliya, which is home to diverse flora and fauna, and is also a popular trekking and tourist destination.

Ministry’s Response

Acting on these complaints, the Ministry has asked the Uttarakhand Forest Department to conduct a detailed investigation and submit a report. Forest officials have been directed to verify land records, permissions, and construction details, and to identify individuals or organisations responsible for the activity.

Significance of Khaliya Reserve

Khaliya Top, situated at an altitude of over 11,000 feet, is one of Kumaon’s most scenic alpine meadows, offering panoramic views of snow-clad peaks like Panchachuli and Nanda Devi. It is a biodiversity-rich zone and part of the buffer landscape connecting higher Himalayan ranges. Conservationists fear that illegal tourism infrastructure could lead to deforestation, waste mismanagement, and disruption of wildlife habitats.

Wider Concerns Over Hill Tourism

The incident has revived debates on the sustainability of eco-tourism projects in Uttarakhand. While eco-huts are promoted as low-impact alternatives to hotels, experts caution that without proper planning and regulation, even small structures can strain fragile ecosystems.

What’s Next

The forest department is expected to file its preliminary findings within the coming weeks. If violations are confirmed, demolition of unauthorised structures and legal action against offenders may follow.
