In the sacred shadow of Adi Kailash, one of Uttarakhand’s most revered spiritual and mythological sites, the state witnessed the successful organisation of its first High-Altitude Ultra Run Marathon on Sunday. Held as part of the state’s Silver Jubilee celebrations, the event marked a new chapter in Uttarakhand’s journey towards promoting adventure sports, mountain tourism, and sustainable development in its border regions.
Our correspondent reports that the 60-kilometre-long ultra run began from Adi Kailash, drawing participation from over 700 runners representing 22 states across India. Battling extreme altitudes, biting cold, and challenging Himalayan terrain, participants displayed exceptional endurance, discipline, and determination. The event, celebrated as a fusion of adventure and spirituality, drew large crowds of locals who gathered along the route to cheer the runners.
The participants praised the Uttarakhand government and the district administration for their meticulous arrangements. They also commended the support provided by the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) and the Indian Army, which ensured safety and logistical coordination throughout the difficult route. Medical teams, rescue squads, and control units were stationed at regular intervals, allowing the event to proceed smoothly and securely.
Our correspondent adds that the initiative has brought renewed attention to Adi Kailash, which has seen a steady rise in spiritual and adventure tourism since Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit last year. Locals say that the Prime Minister’s pilgrimage to the sacred site gave the region a new identity and encouraged the development of infrastructure to support tourism and livelihood opportunities.
The event was attended by Tourism Secretary Dheeraj Garbyal, senior ITBP officials, district administration members, police officers, and local representatives. Thousands of residents and visitors turned up to witness the race, waving flags and chanting slogans in support of the runners. The event atmosphere was vibrant, filled with a sense of unity, pride, and celebration.
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami congratulated all participants, organisers, and local citizens for the successful conduct of the historic ultra marathon. “This event is a matter of pride for Uttarakhand,” he said. “Hosting such a challenging race at a sacred site like Adi Kailash is a symbol of courage, endurance, and devotion. It represents the spirit of our mountain people and will inspire a new era of adventure tourism and sports culture in the state.”
The Chief Minister noted that under the leadership and vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, border and Himalayan regions are receiving unprecedented attention for tourism and development. “Since the Prime Minister’s visit to Adi Kailash, the region has seen remarkable growth in spiritual tourism and economic activity,” Dhami said. “Our government is committed to promoting winter and Himalayan tourism through sustainable and inclusive approaches.”
The Chief Minister added that the development of frontier areas remains a top government priority. “Events like the ultra marathon not only strengthen the local economy but also motivate the youth to embrace adventure sports and outdoor fitness as a way of life,” he said.
Our correspondent reports that several participants described the experience as both physically demanding and spiritually fulfilling. Many said running amidst the towering peaks of the Himalayas felt like a pilgrimage rather than a competition. “It was a test of endurance and a journey within,” said one runner from Himachal Pradesh.
The event was supported by local communities, with volunteers managing hydration points, food stalls, and cleanliness drives along the trail. Environmental groups also participated to ensure minimal ecological impact, promoting a “clean mountain, green mountain” message throughout the marathon.
Our correspondent adds that experts believe this pioneering event will significantly boost adventure tourism in Uttarakhand’s border districts, encouraging domestic and international athletes to explore the state’s high-altitude trails. The marathon is also expected to attract new investment in eco-friendly tourism infrastructure while empowering local youth through employment and skill development opportunities.
The successful execution of the first High-Altitude Ultra Run has set a precedent for future events in the region. By blending culture, spirituality, and adventure, Uttarakhand has once again reaffirmed its position as the land of limitless possibilities; where courage meets divinity amid the mighty Himalayas.
