The political climate in Punjab heated up on Thursday as Congress leader Pargat Singh launched a sharp attack on the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)-led state government, accusing it of failing to rein in the growing wave of violent crime.
Concerns Over Public Safety Pargat Singh highlighted a series of recent incidents, including the daylight murder of a trader under police protection and violent assaults on professionals in urban centres. He alleged that the administration had become indifferent to the safety of ordinary citizens. “The situation is spiralling out of control, and the government is watching silently,” Singh said, demanding urgent intervention.
Charges Against the Government The Congress leader accused the AAP government of being distracted by political agendas instead of prioritising law and order. He argued that lax policing and poor governance were emboldening criminals, undermining the confidence of both businesses and common people in the state’s security apparatus.
Demand for Action Singh urged Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann to take immediate corrective steps, including the deployment of additional police resources and stricter enforcement mechanisms. He called for a comprehensive roadmap to restore safety in cities and towns, warning that unchecked violence could damage Punjab’s reputation as a hub for trade and investment.
Political Fallout The statement comes amid growing opposition pressure on the AAP government, which has been criticised in recent months for its handling of law and order. Analysts suggest the issue of public safety could emerge as a key political flashpoint in the run-up to future state elections.
