Delhi Explosion
A massive explosion in a parked car near Gate No. 1 of the Red Fort Metro Station in New Delhi today evening sparked a fire that engulfed several nearby vehicles, injuring several people and triggering panic in the area.
According to officials from the Delhi Fire Department, the explosion occurred around 7 p.m. Multiple vehicles parked near the site caught fire soon after, filling the area with dense smoke. Fire tenders rushed to the spot and brought the blaze under control after an intense effort.
Our correspondent reports that the cause of the explosion is yet to be confirmed. Forensic teams have begun investigating whether it resulted from a mechanical fault, a gas leak, or deliberate sabotage.
Eyewitnesses said they heard a loud bang followed by flames and thick smoke. “The sound was deafening, and the heat was intense. Everyone started running for safety,” said a local shopkeeper. The incident occurred in a busy part of Old Delhi that sees heavy tourist movement throughout the day.
Police officials immediately cordoned off the area, diverting traffic from the Red Fort and nearby Chandni Chowk to ensure public safety. Firefighters prevented the blaze from spreading to other vehicles and nearby shops.
Our correspondent adds that security agencies have heightened vigilance around the Red Fort, a high-security zone and UNESCO World Heritage site. CCTV footage from the vicinity is being examined, and witness statements are being collected.
No casualties have been officially reported so far, though several people suffered minor injuries while attempting to move to safety. Emergency teams remained on-site late into the night to cool down the vehicles and inspect for residual flammable material.
Experts note that explosions near sensitive areas in the national capital warrant a thorough investigation. The Delhi Police’s Special Cell and forensic experts are jointly examining the wreckage to determine the exact sequence of events.
Residents and shopkeepers nearby expressed concern over safety lapses in parking and traffic management near tourist-heavy zones. Authorities have assured that necessary precautions and enhanced surveillance measures will be implemented immediately.
Officials said a detailed report on the cause of the blast will be made public once the investigation is complete. For now, the area remains sealed, and normal traffic movement is expected to resume after inspection.
