Bihar Voter Turnout

The first phase of the Bihar Assembly elections recorded an impressive voter turnout of 64.66 per cent, marking one of the highest participation rates in the state’s electoral history. Polling, which took place yesterday across 18 districts and 121 constituencies, was largely peaceful and concluded without major incidents.

According to the Election Commission of India, voting began at 7 am and continued until 5 pm in most polling booths, with extended hours in certain regions due to high voter enthusiasm. The turnout figure reflects a significant rise compared to the 2020 Assembly elections, where the first phase registered a turnout of around 57 per cent.

Election officials said that despite isolated technical issues, the polling process remained smooth and well-coordinated. The Commission praised voters for their discipline and cooperation, calling the first phase a demonstration of faith in the democratic process.

The high turnout was driven by widespread participation from women and first-time voters. In several constituencies, women outnumbered men at the ballot boxes. Polling booths in districts such as Gaya, Aurangabad, and Rohtas reported enthusiastic crowds of women queuing since early morning.

Observers noted that the record turnout underlined the electorate’s growing engagement with local governance issues such as employment, education, and infrastructure. Analysts said this phase could play a decisive role in shaping the overall outcome of the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections.

The Election Commission deployed over 1.3 lakh security personnel to ensure safe and fair polling. Central Armed Police Forces, state police, and home guards were stationed at all sensitive and vulnerable booths. Drone surveillance and live web monitoring were also used to prevent any untoward incidents.

Polling officials reported that less than 1.2 per cent of Electronic Voting Machines had to be replaced due to minor faults — a significant improvement over previous years. In several constituencies, model polling stations equipped with digital facilities were introduced to enhance voter convenience.

The 121 constituencies that went to polls yesterday cover regions across Magadh, Bhojpur, and parts of Mithilanchal. The remaining 122 seats will vote in the second phase on November 11, while counting will take place on November 14.

Political observers said that the high voter turnout could reflect anti-incumbency sentiment in certain regions but also pointed to improved election management and growing political awareness. With both the ruling and opposition alliances claiming confidence, the focus now shifts to the second phase of polling.

Election officials also highlighted the role of awareness campaigns in achieving this turnout. Programmes under the Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) initiative encouraged participation, especially among women, youth, and first-time voters.

The Election Commission lauded voters and polling officials alike for ensuring a peaceful and participatory start to Bihar’s multi-phase Assembly election.
