Yellow Alert for Heavy Rain in Nainital Till September 24

The Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert for Nainital and several neighbouring districts of Uttarakhand, warning of heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and lightning until 24th September (Wednesday). The alert, announced today, has prompted the district administration to step up preparedness amid concerns of landslides, waterlogging, and road disruptions.

Our correspondent reports that intermittent downpours are likely over the next three days as the monsoon continues to linger in the region. Although the season is drawing to a close, the weather system over northern India has intensified temporarily, causing instability. The impact is expected to be felt most in hilly stretches, where vulnerable slopes are at risk of minor landslides.

Authorities have cautioned residents living near steep terrain and riverbanks to remain alert. Disaster management teams have been directed to monitor sensitive locations around Nainital, Bhimtal, and connecting routes to Almora and Haldwani. These areas are prone to disruption during heavy rainfall due to falling debris and sudden landslips. Emergency response units have also been asked to stay on standby.

Our correspondent adds that the district administration has issued advisories for tourists as well. With Nainital being a popular late-monsoon destination, travellers have been urged to check weather forecasts and avoid unnecessary journeys during peak rainfall hours. Hotel owners and tour operators have been advised to share regular updates with visitors and coordinate with local authorities in case of emergencies.

Meteorologists pointed out that while rainfall at this time of year is not unusual, its intensity could lead to local challenges. “Even as monsoon begins to retreat, active systems may still bring spells of heavy rain. This period is often deceptive because people assume the worst is over,” noted an IMD official during the briefing.

Our correspondent reports that the yellow alert also warns of temporary power disruptions, falling tree branches, and difficulties in visibility for drivers. Commuters using highways and mountain roads have been advised to carry emergency supplies and avoid night travel if possible.

Over the past few years, Uttarakhand has experienced recurring challenges with monsoon activity, including flash floods and landslides that have caused significant damage to infrastructure. Officials stress that while the current alert is precautionary, preparedness is essential to minimise risk.

Our correspondent adds that the monsoon is expected to recede by the end of September, but experts caution that transitional weather often brings unpredictable patterns. For Nainital, the coming days will test preparedness measures and highlight the importance of early warnings in protecting both residents and visitors.
