The Uttarakhand High Court has sought a detailed report from the state government and the municipality following concerns over alleged misuse of funds in the renovation of the historic Durga Sah Municipal Library in Nainital.
Our Correspondent reports that the High Court took suo motu cognizance of a public interest litigation highlighting irregularities in the project. The renovation, carried out in 2023–24 at a cost of ₹1.5 crore, was funded by the Asian Development Bank.
However, despite the expenditure, several structural deficiencies have been reported, including loose woodwork and fragile glass fittings, raising safety concerns for readers and visitors. The Uttarakhand High Court has now directed both the municipality and the state to submit a comprehensive status report within four weeks.
Our Correspondent adds that the library, built during the British era, is one of Nainital’s cultural landmarks and a key public institution. Citizens and activists had raised questions about the quality of the renovation soon after the work was completed, citing a lack of transparency and accountability in the utilisation of funds.
The court’s intervention has been welcomed by local residents who view the library as part of their heritage. Many have demanded that the renovation work be re-examined and corrective measures taken to preserve the historic structure while ensuring public safety.
The matter will now be taken up again after the submission of the report.
