In a major crackdown against fraud and deceit, police in Haridwar arrested six imposters under Operation Kalanemi. The operation, launched by the district police to identify and apprehend those cheating the public under false pretenses, has already led to multiple arrests, with the latest action marking a significant success.

According to officials, the six individuals posed as spiritual healers and miracle workers, preying on vulnerable people by offering fake remedies, fortune-telling, and promises of curing illnesses or solving personal problems. They would often approach unsuspecting families during religious gatherings, promising solutions in exchange for money and gifts.

Acting on tip-offs from locals, special police teams tracked the suspects’ movements near busy markets and religious spots in Haridwar. After days of surveillance, the suspects were detained during a coordinated raid. Police recovered cash, amulets, and items used to mislead people into believing in their powers.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Haridwar said the arrests reflect the department’s determination to root out such fraudulent activities. “These imposters exploit people’s faith for personal gain. Under Operation Kalanemi, we are committed to exposing and prosecuting such cheats to protect the public, especially during religious fairs and festivals where large gatherings are vulnerable,” he stated.

Operation Kalanemi was launched earlier this year following rising complaints of conmen taking advantage of devotees and tourists in Haridwar. Named after the demon Kalanemi from Hindu mythology, the campaign aims to symbolize the fight against deceit and wrongdoing.

The arrested individuals now face charges under sections related to cheating and fraud in the Indian Penal Code. Police said that further investigations are underway to determine if the suspects are part of a larger network operating in the region. Officials have also appealed to the public to remain cautious of strangers offering miraculous solutions and to immediately report suspicious activities.

Local residents have welcomed the arrests, saying such imposters have been troubling the community for years. “They target simple people, especially villagers and pilgrims, by pretending to perform rituals or cures. Many families have lost hard-earned money to these tricks. We are glad the police are finally taking strong action,” a resident remarked.

Police have intensified patrolling around Har Ki Pauri, temples, and nearby areas to ensure devotees are not misled. Authorities said public awareness campaigns will also be run to educate people about common frauds and how to verify genuine services.

The arrests under Operation Kalanemi highlight the importance of coordinated action between police and the community. With faith and tourism forming a vital part of Haridwar’s identity, officials stressed that protecting devotees from exploitation is as important as ensuring law and order.
