In a tragic attack at a church in Grand Blanc Township, Michigan, four people were killed and eight were injured on Sunday during a morning service. Police identified the assailant as a former United States Marine who was later shot dead in an exchange with responding officers. Investigators said the attacker drove into the church compound, opened fire, and a blaze broke out as congregants fled for safety.

Authorities said officers reached the scene within minutes and engaged the shooter. Fire crews worked alongside police to evacuate those trapped as smoke and flames spread inside the building. Officials later confirmed that improvised devices and fuel were recovered during the response, and specialist teams were called to secure the site and examine evidence.

Witnesses described panic as worshippers sought cover while the attacker continued to fire. Emergency medical teams established a triage area outside the church to stabilise the wounded before transporting them to nearby hospitals. Doctors reported a mix of gunshot and fire related injuries. Local officials appealed for blood donations and asked residents to avoid the area to keep access routes clear for emergency vehicles.

The suspect was named by local law enforcement as a forty year old resident of the region with prior military service. Investigators are examining his home, vehicle, and electronic devices to determine motive, including whether the church or any individuals were specifically targeted. The Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco Firearms and Explosives are assisting the local inquiry.

State and national leaders condemned the violence and expressed condolences to the families of the victims. The governor said resources would remain on site for as long as required and promised support for the community. Faith leaders from across the state announced vigils and counselling services for survivors and relatives.

Fire officials said the building suffered significant damage, and structural engineers will assess safety before any decision on recovery of remaining property inside the sanctuary. The congregation will relocate services to an alternative venue while repairs and the investigation continue.

Police urged anyone with video or photographs from the incident to share them through an official evidence portal. They also asked the public not to circulate unverified footage or speculate on social media, noting that misinformation can hinder witness testimony and traumatised families.

Security advisers said houses of worship should review emergency plans, including evacuation drills, medical kits, clear signage, and communication protocols with local police. They emphasised that rapid coordination between congregants, first responders, and hospitals can save lives in mass casualty situations.

Counsellors and non profit groups have set up support centres offering mental health services, legal guidance, and assistance with insurance claims. Schools and workplaces in the area have also arranged grief counselling for students and staff affected by the event.

The investigation remains active. Authorities said they would release further verified details once next of kin notifications are complete and forensic analysis is finished.
