The Uttarakhand government has made clear it bears no responsibility for the college union elections recently held across Dehradun, after reports of disturbances and complaints from students. Authorities have stated that organizing these polls is the domain of the individual colleges and student bodies, not the state administration.
According to official sources, several students raised issues such as irregularities in voting, allegations of unfair practices, and concerns about administrative intervention, prompting media attention. Our correspondent reports that several colleges hosted union elections simultaneously this week, drawing large student participation, but also criticism over how some polls were conducted.
In response to public concern, the government’s spokesperson declared that while colleges should ensure smooth conduct, no official from the state government has issued directives related to election scheduling, voter eligibility, or results. Our correspondent adds that the government emphasized its stance in a written statement, noting that colleges are autonomous in these affairs.
Some student leaders had reportedly appealed for government oversight after instances of alleged coercion and disruption at certain polling points. The government’s announcement came shortly after these allegations surfaced, making clear that any law enforcement involvement would only follow formal complaints.
Officials also reiterated that they remain available to address grievances submitted via proper channels. Colleges have been urged to form internal election committees to address disputes, maintain transparency in electoral rolls, and ensure impartial supervision during polling. Our correspondent reports that several colleges have responded by promising to review internal procedures and improve oversight.
As of now, no legal action has been reported, but student unions are expected to demand clearer regulations and perhaps state-level guidelines to prevent further disputes. Our correspondent adds that many students are calling for greater accountability from college administrations and better facilitation of voting rights.
