Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami today lauded the contributions of women’s self-help groups (SHGs) and sanitation workers during his visit to Bhararisain, the summer capital of Uttarakhand. He highlighted their role in strengthening rural livelihoods and maintaining public hygiene, which he described as “the foundation of a clean and prosperous Uttarakhand.”
Appreciation for Grassroots Efforts
Addressing a gathering, CM Dhami said that women associated with SHGs have become key drivers of economic self-reliance in villages, not only supplementing household income but also empowering communities. He praised sanitation workers for their tireless service, particularly in remote areas, ensuring that public spaces remain clean even during the ongoing monsoon season.
“These women and sanitation workers are unsung heroes who keep our villages strong and our towns functional. Their dedication inspires us to create policies that support their progress,” the Chief Minister noted.
Call to Tourists
Dhami also appealed to tourists visiting Uttarakhand to act responsibly, respect local traditions, and contribute positively to local economies. He urged visitors to choose local homestays, handicrafts, and farm products, thereby strengthening rural livelihoods while experiencing the true culture of Uttarakhand.
Government Initiatives
The state government has been promoting SHGs through financial support, training programmes, and market linkages under schemes like NRLM (National Rural Livelihood Mission). Dhami reiterated that his government would continue expanding such programmes, while also ensuring sanitation workers receive recognition and better working conditions.
Broader Context
The visit to Bhararisain comes at a time when Uttarakhand is seeking to balance tourism growth with sustainable rural development. Officials say the government is focusing on community-based tourism and grassroots economic models, both of which place SHGs and sanitation workers at the centre of policy planning.
