Footbridge Planned Over Serighat Stream in Almora

In a move to improve connectivity, the state government has approved the construction of a footbridge over the Serighat stream in Almora. The new bridge is expected to facilitate easier movement for local residents, especially in monsoon-prone periods when the stream’s flow swells and cuts off access.

Our correspondent reports that the Public Works Department (PWD) has been instructed to prepare detailed plans and initiate the tendering process soon. The footbridge is to be built near the existing crossing point used by villagers and small vehicles.

The project aims to provide a reliable and safe pedestrian link between hamlets on either side of Serighat. During the rainy season, locals often struggle to cross the stream, relying on temporary or makeshift arrangements that become unsafe under high water levels.

Our correspondent adds that residents have long demanded a permanent structure to ensure daily activities—such as attending school, markets and health centres—are not disrupted by the stream’s seasonal fluctuations. Many households report facing delays, disruptions and even dangers, especially children and the elderly, when crossing the watercourse in high flow.

Department officials say the bridge design will consider resilience against flooding and strong currents. The structure will include elevated piers, railing protection and durable materials to withstand harsh weather. Estimated cost, construction timeline and technical specifications are yet to be disclosed, but local sources say the bridge is likely to be completed within 12 to 18 months once work commences.

This bridge is part of the government’s broader push to enhance rural infrastructure and improve access in hilly terrain. The state has been emphasising smaller connectivity projects such as footbridges, rural roads and walking tracks to integrate remote communities more securely into the mainstream.

For the residents of Serighat and surrounding areas, the footbridge brings hope of safer travel, uninterrupted access even in heavy rains, and better linkage to essential services. Community leaders have expressed gratitude and pledged to assist in overseeing prompt execution.
