Govt Enables Families to Report Deaths via myAadhaar Portal

NEW DELHI: The Government has launched a simplified mechanism for citizens to report the death of a family member, allowing them to notify the authorities through the myAadhaar portal. This initiative aims to make official death reporting more accessible and efficient.

The new facility enables a family member or legal heir to submit a death report online using Aadhaar authentication. Once submitted, the authorities will process the report and update official records accordingly, thus reducing the need for multiple physical visits and streamlining administrative procedures.

Officials said this change reflects the government’s commitment to ease-of-access for citizens, especially in times of bereavement when paperwork and physical travel can be difficult. By enabling digital reporting, the government intends to lighten the administrative burden on families and speed up the certification process.

In addition, the facility integrates with other relevant registers and databases, so once a death is reported and verified, related services and notifications (such as pension stoppage, inheritance records, or other benefits) can be updated more swiftly.

Government sources emphasise that proper verification will continue to remain a priority. The portal will require Aadhaar-based identity checks and necessary supporting documentation to prevent misuse. Once the report is filed online, an acknowledgment will be issued and the local civil registration authority will coordinate the formalities and record-keeping.

Citizens have welcomed this user-friendly step. Many living in remote or rural areas find it challenging to travel to registration offices, especially during monsoon or in difficult terrain. This digital option significantly reduces hardship for such families and ensures timely reporting.

The new system builds on past digitisation efforts under the national e-governance initiative. Officials said this is part of a broader drive to simplify government services and make them more citizen-centric across health, civil registration, social security and welfare sectors.

With this move, the government aims to achieve higher compliance in civil registration, better data accuracy, and more inclusive access to essential services. Time-bound online reporting also reduces delay in record updates and may help prevent misuse of identity documents.

The death-reporting facility via the myAadhaar portal is effective immediately. Citizens and family members are urged to use the portal for registering deaths, especially where physical reporting may be difficult. Authorities have stressed that all submissions will undergo verification and that fraudulent entries will be subject to legal action.
