A fresh spell of winter-weather is expected to affect parts of the state today, with light rain and snow forecast across upper reaches and a sharp increase in cold, fog and chill-winds likely in the plains.
According to the regional meteorological centre, isolated light showers are expected in districts including Dehradun, Uttarkashi, Chamoli, Tehri, Bageshwar and Pithoragarh, while areas at elevations exceeding 4 000 metres may see early snowfall. The weather shift is driven by a western disturbance forecast to bring moisture-laden winds and cloud cover.
In the hill regions, vineyards, pilgrim centres and pass areas will experience enhanced cold and wind-chill from tonight onward, as early snow blankets higher peaks and increases the risk of cold-wave conditions. Meanwhile the plains and subtropical valleys are entering a phase of increased fog, reduced visibility and lower minimum temperatures. Morning commuters and highway travellers are advised to exercise caution.
Local officials say that the trend of unstable weather may persist until about November 6, after which drier and calmer conditions are expected. However, in the interim, the combination of rain, snowfall and cold winds could impact road-travel and pilgrimage routes in the mountains, and may slow down outdoor activities in lower altitudes due to dense mist.
The meteorological office has issued a yellow-level advisory for cold wave and fog in low-lying districts, recommending the use of warm clothing, avoiding early-morning travel where possible, and ensuring livestock and vulnerable populations in high-altitude zones are provided adequate shelter and heat.
Travellers to high-altitude destinations such as the Badrinath-region or other shrine sites are being urged to check road conditions and heed local advisories as snow accumulation can form quickly and road-blocks may arise without warning. In the foothills, the onset of fog and damp-conditions may reduce visibility on key road networks linking pilgrimage zones, tourist hubs and rural communities.
With the state entering an early winter phase, farmers in cold-sensitive zones and horticulture operators in hill districts are being asked to protect crops and glasshouses against frost and sudden drop in ambient temperature. The state disaster-response and road agencies have also deployed standby teams for snow-clearing, landslide surveillance and emergency aid in vulnerable zones.
As Uttarakhand transitions into the colder months, authorities emphasise this weather episode as a reminder to take early precautions — from checking weather updates, preparing for colder nights, to enabling high-altitude infrastructure to cope with snow and wind stress.
