India has sent Kirti Vardhan Singh, Minister of State for External Affairs, as Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s special envoy to the Gaza Peace Summit being held today at Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt. The decision to send Singh was made after Prime Minister Modi received a last-minute invitation on Saturday from U.S. President Donald Trump and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi to join the high-level meeting.

In a post on X late Sunday night, Singh wrote, “Arrived in the historic city of Cairo as special representative of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to attend the Gaza Peace Summit at Sharm el-Sheikh.”

The summit, co-chaired by President Trump and President el-Sisi, seeks to establish a concrete framework to end the ongoing Gaza war and restore long-term stability in the region. Over 20 global leaders, including UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and UN Secretary-General António Guterres, are attending the meeting.

According to the Egyptian Presidency, the summit’s primary focus will be to formalise a peace roadmap, ensure humanitarian aid access, and advance diplomatic engagement under the next phase of Trump’s proposed peace plan. The agenda also includes Hamas disarmament and the creation of a new administrative structure for Gaza.

While Israel and Hamas are not participating directly, the presence of international powers and regional stakeholders is expected to generate significant diplomatic momentum. The Palestinian Authority has also opted out of the proceedings.

Observers say that although the absence of the main parties may limit immediate outcomes, the summit could still play a crucial role in coordinating international humanitarian efforts and defining pathways for reconstruction in Gaza.

The high-stakes meeting comes amid rising civilian casualties and growing global concern over the humanitarian crisis in the enclave. The United Nations, European Union, and Arab League have all called for urgent steps to de-escalate tensions and resume peace talks.

As the summit unfolds in Egypt today, the world watches closely for any sign of progress that might pave the way toward a sustainable ceasefire and a renewed diplomatic process in the Middle East.
