Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to embark on a two-day tour of Mizoram, Manipur, and Assam beginning today, highlighting the government’s focus on infrastructure and inclusive development in the northeastern region. His visit will cover a wide range of initiatives, from transport and education projects to cultural programmes and community outreach.
Ahead of his arrival, the Prime Minister shared his vision for the region in a series of posts on X, saying that his government is committed to “inclusive and all-round development” of Manipur and other northeastern states. He noted that the trip will include engagements in Churachandpur and Imphal on September 13, where he will lay the foundation stones for road and National Highway projects, women’s hostels, and other key initiatives. Modi will also inaugurate facilities such as the Civil Secretariat at Mantripukhri, a new Police Headquarters, an IT Special Economic Zone building, and an all-women’s market designed to empower women entrepreneurs across several districts.
The Prime Minister’s tour will begin in Mizoram’s capital, Aizawl, where he will inaugurate the 51.38-km Bairabi-Sairang railway line, making Aizawl the fourth northeastern capital city to be connected by rail after Guwahati, Agartala, and Itanagar. Calling it a historic milestone, Modi wrote, “This visit is very special because this wonderful city is going to be connected to the railway network for the very first time. Built in very challenging terrain, the new line features several major and minor bridges.”
Modi said that the new connectivity would boost trade and tourism in Mizoram and the wider region. The railway expansion will be accompanied by new road projects and sports infrastructure, including the Khelo India Multipurpose Indoor Hall. He will also inaugurate a residential school at Kawrthah and an Eklavya Model Residential School at Tlangnuam, aimed at improving education access for tribal students.
Our correspondent reports that the Prime Minister, accompanied by senior Union ministers, will also flag off three new train services from Aizawl: the Sairang–Anand Vihar Rajdhani Express (weekly) linking Mizoram directly with Delhi, the Kolkata–Sairang Express (tri-weekly), and the Guwahati–Sairang Express (daily). These services are expected to significantly improve mobility for passengers and strengthen economic ties between the northeast and major cities.
From Mizoram, Modi will travel to Manipur, marking his first visit to the state since the ethnic violence in May 2023. Our correspondent adds that in Churachandpur and Imphal, he will interact with affected communities and reassure them of the Centre’s commitment to peace and rehabilitation. His itinerary includes public addresses as well as project inaugurations intended to speed up recovery and development.
The final leg of the tour will bring him to Assam, where he will spend two days in Guwahati. On September 13, he will participate in the birth centenary celebrations of Bharat Ratna Bhupen Hazarika, a cultural icon whose legacy in music and literature continues to inspire. “His contribution to our culture is monumental, and his works remain timeless,” Modi wrote in his post.
On September 14, the Prime Minister will inaugurate projects worth over ₹19,000 crore across Assam, furthering the state’s growth trajectory in infrastructure, connectivity, and industry. Our correspondent reports that the announcements are expected to cover roadways, bridges, power projects, and new educational facilities, signalling a multi-sectoral development push.
Our correspondent adds that Modi’s tour is being seen as both a symbolic and practical reaffirmation of the government’s focus on the northeast, a region long considered strategically vital but historically under-developed. By combining infrastructure upgrades with cultural celebrations, the visit underscores a narrative of integration, connectivity, and respect for local heritage.
