India successfully conducted the test-firing of its Agni-5 Intermediate Range Ballistic Missile (IRBM) from the Integrated Test Range (ITR), Chandipur on Wednesday, reaffirming the country’s strategic deterrence capabilities. The missile launch, carried out under the aegis of the Strategic Forces Command (SFC), validated all operational and technical parameters.

About the Test
Defence officials confirmed that the test was successful, with the missile performing exactly as planned across all stages. The evaluation was aimed at confirming high accuracy in guidance, propulsion, and control systems. The test follows India’s policy of maintaining a credible minimum deterrent while strengthening its strategic posture in a challenging regional security environment.

The Agni-5 Missile

  • Range: Classified as an Intermediate Range Ballistic Missile, Agni-5 is capable of striking targets well beyond 5,000 km, effectively covering large parts of Asia, including potential strategic theatres.

  • Features: It is a three-stage, solid-fuelled missile designed with advanced navigation and guidance systems. The missile also incorporates cutting-edge composite materials for reduced weight and improved efficiency.

  • Launch System: Agni-5 is road- and rail-mobile, enhancing its operational flexibility and survivability.

Strategic Significance
The Agni-5 is the most advanced missile in India’s indigenous Agni series, developed under the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). Experts say its successful deployment marks a major milestone in India’s deterrence doctrine, ensuring second-strike capability in the event of a nuclear confrontation.

India’s Missile Development Programme
The test comes at a time when India is actively modernising its missile arsenal. With systems like Agni-1 to Agni-5, along with Prithvi missiles and other tactical systems, the country continues to reinforce its position as a key regional power with credible strategic reach.

Government’s Statement
Defence sources noted that the test once again highlights the success of India’s “Make in India” initiative in defence technology and reflects the high level of expertise achieved by Indian scientists and engineers.
