Orange Alert for Heavy Rain Issued by IMD; State Remains on High Alert

Rains

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall in Uttarakhand’s hilly regions for August 17th (Sunday). Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely as persistent rains are expected to bring further challenges to the region.

IMD Warning and Impacted Areas

The affected districts include Uttarkashi, Rudraprayag, Chamoli, Tehri, and Pithoragarh, where intense rainfall is forecast today and into Monday. Streams and rivers are swelling rapidly, increasing the risk of floods and landslides across the mountainous terrain.

Advisory Issued for Tourists and Pilgrims

Officials have urged tourists and pilgrims traveling to Gangotri, Yamunotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath to avoid unnecessary travel. Extreme caution is advised, as landslide-prone highways—particularly the Gangotri and Badrinath routes—are vulnerable to disruptions and sudden weather changes.

Government and Disaster Response Preparedness

Disaster preparedness is active: the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Public Works Department (PWD), and Border Roads Organisation (BRO) teams are on standby to tackle emergencies and clear potential blockages. Local administrations have designated safe zones and temporary shelters in flood- and landslide-prone zones.

This alert comes amid Uttarakhand’s ongoing efforts to recover from previous disasters, including flash floods and highway blockages in Uttarkashi. With the monsoon intensifying, the state remains under vigilant watch, prioritising community safety and infrastructure protection.
