In light of emerging security alerts, the administration of Baramulla district in Jammu & Kashmir has announced a complete ban on drone operations until 31 October 2025. The order, issued on 13 October 2025, aims to deter misuse of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) near sensitive installations and along strategic zones.
Citing intelligence reports of possible smuggling and reconnaissance activities using drones, the District Magistrate invoked Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023, to enforce the prohibition. All civilian drone flights—private, commercial, or recreational—are subject to stringent restrictions.
Law enforcement agencies have been directed to seize any unauthorised drones in operation and pursue legal action against violators. Exemptions may be granted to government or security agencies conducting official operations, provided they obtain explicit clearance in advance.
Officials have emphasised that the festive season, with heightened movement and activity, raises the risk of drone misuse. Given Baramulla’s proximity to sensitive border zones, the ban reflects a precautionary stance aimed at safeguarding installations and public safety.
Local residents, educational institutions, and commercial operators have been urged to comply with the order. Any drone operations conducted without authorisation could invite penalties under security laws. The administration has also launched awareness drives to inform citizens of the prohibition.
Security analysts have welcomed the ban, noting its preventive value in a region vulnerable to infiltration and contraband attempts via aerial routes. The decision underscores how modern technologies — while beneficial — can be co-opted for illicit purposes in conflict zones.
However, observers warn of possible inconvenience to legitimate users such as agricultural monitoring, disaster management, and surveying. The administration is expected to provide fast-track clearance protocols for essential civilian drone operations under supervised frameworks.
Whether the ban will remain effective throughout the stipulated period depends on enforcement rigour and adaptive responses to evolving security dynamics. As the district braces for heightened vigilance, the drone prohibition underscores how technology regulation is becoming an integral aspect of local governance.
