Fourteen Bangladeshi citizens, including eight women, four men and two children, were arrested late Sunday night while attempting to enter India illegally via the Maheshpur border in Jhenaidah.

Officials from the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) said that a patrol team from the Maheshpur Border Outpost (BOP) acted on intelligence around 7:00 pm, apprehending the group near the Baghadanga and Ghoshalpur border areas. The suspects were found without valid travel documents.

The BGB’s Assistant Director for Battalion 58, Major Emadur Rahman, confirmed the arrests and said the individuals were subsequently handed over to local police for further legal proceedings. A case has been registered in connection to the incident.

According to BGB sources, the operation targeted a trafficking route often exploited for cross-border movement. Some arrested individuals admitted their intention was to enter India to seek work opportunities.

Local law enforcement officials are coordinating with the BGB to investigate any human trafficking links or facilitation networks that may have enabled the illegal border crossing.

This arrest underscores ongoing challenges in securing the Bangladesh–India border, particularly at points along the Jashore–Jhenaidah corridor. Security forces on both sides have in recent months stepped up surveillance and operations to deter illegal crossings and trafficking.

The case will now be processed under applicable Bangladeshi and Indian immigration and security laws.
