Bhimtal Traders Protest Road Widening Proposal of PWD

Traders in Bhimtal have launched a protest against road widening work along the main market stretch, fearing that shops and houses will be demolished in the process. The public works department recently marked properties with red lines to indicate areas identified for encroachment removal, sparking strong resistance from the local business community.

Our correspondent reports that on Thursday, September 11, 2025, a meeting of traders was held in the Bakhli market area under the leadership of local businessman Pankaj Joshi. Participants included shopkeepers and residents from adjoining areas. The gathering voiced unanimous opposition to the markings, claiming that the widening plan threatens livelihoods and would severely disrupt the commercial lifeline of Bhimtal.

According to the traders, the authorities had not properly consulted them before initiating the road expansion drive. They argued that families who have run businesses for decades now face the possibility of losing their only source of income. Our correspondent adds that the protesters resolved to seek dialogue with the public works department (Lonivi), irrigation department, and SIDCUL officials to demand alternatives that protect homes and shops.

The project in question is part of the Mansakhand Yojana, which aims to upgrade a critical road link from Ranibag to Motiyapathar, passing through Bhimtal, Khutani, Chafi, Dhari, Dhanachuli, Paharpani, Shaharfatak, and other towns. Engineers said the plan involves widening the road to a standard width of 12 meters to improve connectivity and safety in the hilly terrain.

Our correspondent reports that executive engineer Krishna Kumar clarified the government’s position, stating that the route had been cut before 1980 and that compensation was issued at that time. He added that the structures now facing removal are classified as encroachments. According to him, the department will follow due process, including compensation where applicable, and ensure the project is implemented under existing rules.

The traders, however, reject this reasoning. They argue that the properties marked are not illegal encroachments but long-established commercial units that provide employment to hundreds. Many said they had invested savings into their shops, obtained licenses, and paid taxes faithfully. Our correspondent adds that shopkeepers fear once the demolition begins, it will be impossible to sustain their families, as no relocation or rehabilitation plan has been announced.

The protest has also drawn support from local residents, who worry that the widening project will alter the character of Bhimtal market, a hub for both tourists and locals. Some warned that the demolition of shops could reduce footfall and hurt tourism revenue, which the region heavily relies upon. Others, however, welcomed the road widening, citing traffic congestion, accidents, and bottlenecks that worsen during tourist season.

Local leaders have called for a balance between development and community rights. They urged the administration to reassess the alignment of the road and consider bypasses or staggered widening to minimize displacement. Some have suggested phased work with prior rehabilitation of affected traders, rather than immediate demolition.

Our correspondent reports that tension remains high in Bhimtal market, where shopkeepers continue to display banners and organize meetings. Authorities said they will maintain dialogue and attempt to build consensus before moving ahead with eviction or demolition.

Our correspondent adds that the issue highlights a broader challenge in Uttarakhand—balancing infrastructure development with the protection of local livelihoods. While projects like the Mansakhand Yojana promise improved roads and easier connectivity, their execution often sparks disputes over land use, compensation, and the rights of long-standing communities.
